Announcements GRAD SCHOOL DAY The sixth annual Graduate and Professional School Information Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Representatives from more than 80 universities and colleges nationwide will be available to discuss their programs. Concurrent seminars in the Pioneer Room will address funding options for graduate studies, selecting and applying to a school, succeeding in graduate school and taking graduate or professional admission exams. HONORARY DEGREES Faculty have until Nov. 30 to submit nominations for honorary degrees to be awarded in May 1996 and later. Honorary degrees are awarded for extraordinary achievement in developing new knowledge and understanding through scholarship, research and development and/or in creative activity. They are not awarded for philanthropic activity or service to Iowa State. Active or retired faculty are ineligible. ESTATE PLANNING SEMINARS "Estate Planning: the Basics" will be held from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in 275 Scheman. This seminar is an introduction to estate planning, including general guidelines, powers of attorney, medical directives and wills. The registration fee is $14 and includes materials and a light supper. "Estate Planning: Trusts" will be held from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in 275 Scheman. This seminar will cover living trusts, life insurance trusts, charitable trusts and provisions for beneficiaries who are handicapped. Attendance at the Oct. 2 workshop is encouraged. LIPID TESTING The Student Health Center will provide lipid profile screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 and Oct. 2-6, on the first floor of the Student Health Center. The test measures total cholesterol, HDL, VLDL, LDL, triglycerides and a ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. A fast of at least 10 hours is required. The cost is $9.50, cash only. BEVIS LAB DEDICATION At 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, the industrial education and technology department will dedicate the new Bevis Process Simulation Laboratory, 42 Industrial Education II. An open house begins at 3 p.m. The lab, funded by $170,000 in gifts from Pella and its affiliated companies (and named for Pella CEO Wayne Bevis), was established to help companies increase profitability by improving processes and products. Manufacturers will collaborate with ISU faculty and students to improve their manufacturing processes. PHONE BOOK RECYCLING The ISU Recycling Committee kicks off its third annual phone directory recycling effort in early October, when new ISU directories are issued. TelecomUSA phone books will arrive during the last two weeks of October and the USWest directories will arrive the week of Nov. 6. On Saturday, Nov. 11, a group of volunteers will pick up used phone books from most campus buildings.
