Lied Center Name Official by Anne Dolan Five years after it was completed, the recreation/athletic facility will have a "real" name. The Iowa State community is invited to a gathering to officially dedicate the Ernst F. Lied Recreation Athletic Center and recognize the initial 100 recipients of freshman scholarships made possible through a gift from Lied's trust. The building christening begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Lied Center. Attending will be Christina Hixson, a Clarinda native and the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust, Las Vegas. Last spring, Hixson, on behalf of the trust, gave a $5 million gift to Iowa State. It will fund $2,500 scholarships annually to 100 Iowans who, if not for the awards, might not be able to attend ISU. The recreation/athletic building is an appropriate choice to bear the Lied name because both the building and the scholarships serve students in a variety of fields, said Phyllis Peters, director of public relations for the ISU Foundation. Following a short program, Hixson and the scholarship recipients, along with their parents, will be honored at a reception. Ernst F. Lied was a successful businessman who died in 1990. He moved from Omaha to Las Vegas in 1959. His estate created the Lied trust. _____ contact: Anne Dolan, Internal Communications, (515) 294-7065 updated: 9-15-95
