GARDENS, CENTER ARE FOCUS OF PUBLIC CELEBRATIONS SEPT. 16-17 by Anne Dolan The Iowa State community is invited to celebrate the completion of two major projects, a $9 million renovation of the Iowa State Center and the $2 million Reiman Gardens. The gardens will be dedicated Saturday, Sept. 16, and the center will be showcased during a Sept. 17 concert in C.Y. Stephens by violinist Itzhak Perlman. GARDEN DEDICATION The garden dedication program begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 16 in the Reiman Gardens, south of the football stadium. Scheduled speakers include President Martin Jischke; College of Agriculture Dean David Topel; horticulture department chair Michael Chaplin; Patty Jischke, president of CoHorts, a garden volunteer group; and Roy and Bobbi Reiman, whose $1.3 million gift launched the project two years ago . Last week, a campanile structure with an electronic bell and keyboard system was installed in the garden. Tin-Shi Tam, ISU's carilloneur, will conclude the program with a performance. CoHorts volunteers and ISU Horticulture Club members will lead garden tours after the program. Refreshments will be served on the patio of the Mahlstede building. Ames residents attending the garden dedication are encouraged to carpool and park on the neighborhood streets west of the garden and Cyclone stadium to leave more stadium parking for out-of-town guests and donors. The Iowa State-Iowa football game begins at noon and stadium lots will fill quickly. CENTER RENOVATION The 3 p.m. concert by Perlman and pianist Samuel Sanders on Sunday, Sept. 17, will mark the first use of the renovated Stephens Auditorium. All buildings in the center complex received a facelift to coincide with its 25th anniversary in 1994. The renovation included cleaned and painted exterior soffits on Stephens, Scheman and the Fisher Theater; repaired and reupholstered seats, new lobby furnishings and new carpet in Stephens; new carpet and lobby furnishings in Scheman; the basketball offices addition to Hilton Coliseum; and new lighting and sound systems, renovated dressing rooms and new carpet in Fisher. Most of the previous interiors and furnishings were original to the buildings. Perlman first played for the American public 27 years ago as a 13-year-old on The Ed Sullivan Show. He performs more than 80 concerts annually and has sold 2.5 million CDs. EMI Classics recently honored him as "Artist of the Year." Perlman said one of his proudest achievements was his collaboration on the score for the film Schindler's List, on which he performed the violin solos. Tickets to the concert are $25 to $38 and available through TicketMaster and the Iowa State Center Box Office. _____ contact: Anne Dolan, Internal Communications, (515) 294-7065 updated: 9-1-95
