Vanguard May Save Travelers Money Faculty and staff are encouraged to consider Vanguard Airlines when making travel arrangements, said Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance. The new airline, which flies out of Des Moines and uses 737 jet aircraft, offers potential cost savings. Vanguard flies to Dallas/Fort Worth; Denver; Kansas City, Mo.; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Salt Lake City; and Wichita, Kan. Fares range from $52 to $184 and in many cases are more than 50 percent less than other carriers. Vanguard may be a viable alternative to driving to Omaha, Kansas City or Minneapolis for lower airfares, Madden said. Madden said he encourages the ISU community to use Vanguard Airlines for both business and personal travel, not only for the cost savings but also to increase passenger volume, which could improve air service out of Des Moines. Better air service helps attract students and visitors to the Ames community. "Central Iowa and the university's interests are best served by increasing air carrier competition in Des Moines," Madden said. As part of its low-cost strategy, Vanguard is not listed in the nationwide computer reservation system. Reservations may be made by calling 1-800-VANGUARD. Travel and Transport, which provides travel services to the university, also can make reservations and provide confirmation numbers. _____ contact: Internal Communications, (515) 294-7065 updated: 7-7-95
