Accident Ends Race For Solar Car On an overcast and rainy June 29 and only about 30 miles from the finish line, an accident ended Iowa State's participation in Sunrayce '95. The car was traveling about 45 mph on E-470 near Denver when the rear tire blew. The blowout sent the car into a guard rail. Driver Maury Anderson suffered a broken leg in the accident. The teardrop-shaped car was a total loss. Officially, PrISUm Cynergy finished 19th out of 38 cars in Sunrayce '95. Penalty time was assessed since the car could not complete the race. The students on the solar car team, who were into their third week of Sunrayce (including all pre-race activities), were stunned by the turn of events. But they were not about to let the setback keep them out of future races. "We definitely want to build another car and be part of Sunrayce '97," said Bryan Arnold, co-director of Team PrISUm. "We felt all along we had a special car, and we will take the positives from this race and apply them to the next race." MIT finished first in the 1,200-mile race with an average speed of 37.23 mph. The University of Minnesota finished second (36.88 mph), and California Polytechnic Institute, Pamona, finished third (33.77 mph). Rounding out the top 10 teams were: George Washington University, Stanford University, Queens University, Northern Essex Community College, Western Michigan University, Mankato and Winona State universities, and the University of Missouri, Columbia. _____ contact: News Service, (515) 294-4917 updated: 7-7-95
