Final Tally In On Clinton Visit To Campus by Anne Dolan The April 25 visit to campus by President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman cost nearly $156,000. Iowa State paid for almost 80 percent -- slightly more than $123,000 -- of the tab. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the co-sponsor of the National Rural Conference, reimbursed Iowa State $27,000, and others, such as members of the media, paid for about $5,500 of the costs. Iowa State's portion was funded with year-end general university funds. The price tag for the National Rural Conference held in the Memorial Union was $125,360, of which Iowa State paid $92,765. Components included nearly $33,000 worth of food prepared by Memorial Union staff for guests, panel members and the media; about $28,000 in preparation work to the Memorial Union and the Great Hall; and nearly $10,000 in additional electricity. Iowa State paid $30,475 in connection with Clinton's address at Hilton Coliseum. Among the costs were $15,000 in building rental and $8,000 for signs in the arena. The campus visit by the president, vice president and agriculture secretary was well worth the costs, university officials say. "It brought national visibility to Iowa State and was a marvelous educational experience for our students, faculty and staff," President Martin Jischke said. "For everyone involved -- from those who attended the conference or speech to the hundreds who helped prepare for the visit to the Iowa State Singers, who serenaded President Clinton -- it was a moment of enormous pride." _____ contact: Anne Dolan, Internal Communications, (515) 294-7065 updated: 6-16-95
