Awards LITERARY COMPETITION Debra Marquart, temporary instructor of English, was one of six writers who received awards in the 14th annual Minnesota Voices Project, a competition for emerging writers sponsored by New Rivers Press, Minneapolis. Marquart's poem, Everything's a Verb, was submitted. DISTINGUISHED FELLOW George Burnet, distinguished professor in chemical engineering and interim director of the College of Engineering, was named a distinguished fellow of the Iowa Academy of Science, the highest honor given to an academy member. Burnet was recognized for scholarly achievements, inspiring scholarship at ISU and excellence in chemical engineering at the national and international levels. SERVICE AWARD Harold "Sande" McNabb, professor of plant pathology, received a distinguished service award from the Iowa Academy of Science. McNabb was honored for his contributions to forestry and plant disease research, for public service and for mentoring students. TEACHING EXCELLENCE Gary Downs, professor of curriculum and instruction, received a distinguished Iowa science teacher award from the Iowa Academy of Science. He was recognized for excellence and innovation as an instructor and leadership on several grant programs to improve math and science teaching. NATIONAL GOLD Iowa State's "Road Scholars" new faculty tour series, coordinated by University Relations and the Office of the Vice President for External Affairs, received a gold medal in the 1995 National CASE Awards' category for community relations projects. The Road Scholars entry was selected from among 21 entries nationwide. One gold and one silver medal were awarded. NATIONAL BRONZE Steve Sullivan, interim director of the News Service, received a bronze medal in the 1995 National CASE Awards' "Article of the Year" category.
