No Memorial Day Service On Campus Iowa State officials will not plan a service in the university's cemetery this Memorial Day, Monday, May 29. The change is due primarily to diminishing attendance numbers in recent years, according to vice president for business and finance Warren Madden and Stan Carpenter, chair of the military science department. Memorial Day falls between the end of spring semester and the beginning of the summer term, and that's a key reason for the low numbers, they said. Madden encouraged those who want to participate in a service to attend the city of Ames' program. Details of that program haven't been finalized yet, but by mid-month, the information will be available on the city's information line, 232-2211, category 1136. The service will be in the municipal cemetery, East Ninth Street and Maxwell Avenue. Madden said the university cemetery will be open on Memorial Day for those who want to visit grave sites there. Past Memorial Day programs in the university cemetery typically included a military color guard and a brief address by a guest speaker. ROTC students rotated color guard responsibilities annually among the program's three divisions, Army, Navy and Air Force. _____ contact: Internal Communications, (515) 294-7065 updated: 5-5-95
