MacKay Named Dean Of Students by Michelle Johnson Kathleen A. MacKay, director of co-curricular programs at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will become Iowa State's dean of students May 15. MacKay will oversee several student services and programs, including student organizations, adult learner and commuter student programs, recreation services, Greek affairs, judicial affairs and services for students with disabilities. "Dr. MacKay has the knowledge and the ability to work successfully with our diverse university community on a variety of complex campus issues," said Thomas Thielen, vice president for student affairs. "In her previous positions, she excelled in all areas of student affairs, and her experience will be a great addition to Iowa State." MacKay has served as director of co-curricular programs at Michigan since 1993. She was a visiting assistant professor at Indiana University's department of higher education and student affairs from 1991 to 1993. Previously, she served as associate dean of students at Mills College, Oakland, Calif., and director of student affairs for the Lyman Briggs Residential College, Michigan State University, East Lansing. MacKay's research has focused on several cultural and student affairs issues. She was one of the researchers who co-wrote Involving Colleges, a 1991 book that promotes student learning and development outside the classroom. She received the B.A. in journalism (1978) from Colorado State University, Fort Collins; the M.S. in student personnel services in higher education (1980) from the University of Vermont, Burlington; and the Ph.D. in higher education (1992) from Indiana University, Bloomington. MacKay succeeds Mary Beth Snyder, who left ISU last summer to become vice president of student affairs at Oakland University, Rochester Hills, Mich.
